Our Dance Program develops knowledge of dance styles and builds upon foundational movements with the integration of advanced steps and combinations.  Students develop their strength, flexibility, and coordination while exploring their artistry.

Ballet

Studio Dansu is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development.  The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels.  Pre-Primary through Level 3 will be taught by ABT® Certified Teacher, Jayme Shimooka, who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Classical ballet technique emphasizes line, posture, control, balance, grace, poise, and discipline while utilizing French terminology.  This technique is taught through barre work, center, and across the floor movement. 

 

Primary Ballet A - 40 min    (ages 5-6)

Your child will begin their study of classical ballet, combining fundamentals with imaginative dance elements to learn basic steps, proper body alignment, and vocabulary.

 

Primary Ballet B - 40 min    (ages 6-7)

Dancers continue to work on their ballet skills to gain strength and balance through listening activities, responding to directions, and creative movement expressions.

 

Primary Ballet C - 40 min    (ages 7+)

Students further develop their use of proper turnout and balletic alignment while expanding their knowledge of ballet vocabulary and retaining the joy of movement.

 

Level 1a & 1b - 60 min    (ages 8+)

Dancers begin a more sophisticated and in-depth study of ballet with an introduction to barre, many new balletic jumps, and the expansion of their ballet vocabulary. 

 

 Minimum of one year previous ballet experience is required. 

 

Level 2a & 2b - 80 min    (ages 9+)

This class takes a more serious approach to classical ballet, with attention on polishing and perfecting the basics of turnout and alignment in the torso, legs, and feet.

 Minimum of two years previous ballet experience is required.  

Pointe

Placement determined by instructor.

Pre-Pointe - 60 min    (ages 11+)

Students focus on strengthening their muscles and ankles so that they may be ready for pointe shoes (in November) where they will begin exercises at the barre en pointe.

 

 Minimum of two years previous ballet experience is required.

 Students must be enrolled in ballet to take this class.

 

Pointe 1 - 60 min    (ages 12+)

Dancers continue their introduction into pointe work at the barre and begin incorporating center and across the floor while focusing on their stability and strength. 

 

 Must have taken Pre-Pointe to enroll in this class. 

 ​Students must be enrolled in ballet to take this class.

Modern

Modern technique explores movement and the dancer’s own creativity to discover the endless possibilities of dance as an outlet for expression.  This technique emphasizes alignment, extension, release, weight, momentum, and force.

 

Beginner - 40 min    (ages 7+)

Students are introduced to the modern concepts of body awareness, exploring different levels, traveling movements, and increasing the dancer’s strength and flexibility.

 

Intermediate - 60 min    (ages 9+)

Dancers continue to expand their modern technique with the introduction of the techniques of Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey through floor and center exercises.. 

 

 Minimum of two years previous modern experience is required.  

Jazz

Jazz Technique combines rhythmic forms of movements using isolations and the entire body.  This technique focuses on flexibility, strength, coordination to music, energetic movements, and creating challenging dance combinations.  

 

Level 1a & 1b - 40 min    (ages 7+)

Students are introduced to basic jazz technique, movements, and terminology.  Style and performance are the main focus with incorporating turns, leaps, and tricks.  

 Students must be enrolled in ballet or modern to take this class.

Tap

Placement determined by instructor.

Tap technique is a form of dance in which feet create rhythmic patterns and sounds.  This technique develops a strong sense of musicality, rhythm, coordination and agility through the student’s control, dynamics, and phrasing.

 

Level 1a & 1b - 30 min    (ages 6+)

Dancers learn the basics of Broadway Tap, Hoofing, and Rhythm Tap while focusing on musicality and sound coordination skills through basic tap moves and vocabulary.

 

Level 2a & 2b - 40 min    (ages 10+)

Students continue to progress with their tap technique, moving on to more difficult rhythmic combinations and sequences while increasing their speed and agility. 

Hip Hop

Hip Hop technique introduces dancers to the foundations of Street Style Hip Hop including popping, locking, breaking, footwork, etc. while also developing a dancer’s musicality, coordination, confidence and performance skills.

 

Level 1a & 1b - 30 min    (ages 6+)

Dancers begin to learn the fundamental techniques and foundations of hip hop while developing their musicality, coordination, confidence, and performance skills.

 

Level 2a & 2b - 40 min    (ages 10+)

Students continue their development of technical skills and are challenged with more difficult and complex sequences and choreography from the beginning level. 

Boyz Crew - 30 min    (ages 6+)

This fun hip hop class is for boys only. No girls allowed : )

Lyrical/Contemporary

Placement determined by instructor.

Lyrical/Contemporary technique teaches fluid movement and choreography often using emotion to motivate the movement.  This technique also emphasizes a strong body line and character performance to convey emotional content.

 

Beginning - 60 min    (ages 10+)

Students focus on improvisation, character development, and emotion weaved together with their individual expression and technical background from Modern or Ballet.
